What To Avoid With A Fresh Cosmetic Tattoo

It’s done! You’ve got your bold new eyebrows, show-stopping eyeliner, a dusting of freckles or head-turning lips, so what should you avoid during the healing process for all cosmetic tattoos?
Avoid soaking your cosmetic tattoo in water.
Avoid soap, cleansers and moisturisers (except for the aftercare cream).
Avoid touching the area with dirty hands or fingers.
Avoid picking and scratching the area.
Avoid botox or chemical treatments for up to a month post-procedure.
Avoid direct sunlight.
Avoid excessive exercise.

Cosmetic Tattoo Healing Timeline

The healing timelines vary due to the different nature and placement of each cosmetic tattoo treatment.

Lip Tattoo

Eyebrow Tattoo

Eyeliner Tattoo

Beauty Spot and Freckle

Days 1-3
Your lips will appear swollen, tender and more vibrant in colour than the final result.
Days 4-10
As healing continues, you may notice the colour darken initially due to scabs being formed. The scabs will eventually peel off, leaving a lighter colour underneath.
Weeks 2-4
Around the second week, the colour may lighten significantly, a natural part of the healing process. As the skin begins to heal, the true colour will emerge.
Weeks 4-6
The colour of the lip blushing will start to reappear, and the final result will become more apparent.
Weeks 6-8
By the end of the eighth week, your lips will be mostly healed.
Days 1-2
The eyebrows will appear darker due to the red skin underneath. There will be some swelling.
Day 3
The eyebrows will start to itch and become thicker in texture.
Days 4-6
Scabs will form over the tattoo. Avoid scratching or itching your eyebrows, as it can cause the ink to fade or become patchy.
Day 5
The scabs finish flaking off, and the colour of your brows becomes softer for a few days.
Week 2
The swelling and excess colouring will subside.
Weeks 4-6
You are booked for your pigment top-up appointment.
Days 1-2
Your eyes will feel tight, tender and puffy. The swelling usually subsides after a few hours, and bruising fades over a few days.
Days 3-6
The film over the tattoo will look dry or flaky. Avoid picking it as it can cause scarring and bring colour out of the skin, resulting in unevenness.
Days 7-14
The initial intense colour of the tattoo will fade during the first two weeks.
Weeks 2-4
Over the next couple of weeks, the eyeliner tattoo will start to reappear as the skin heals and the top layer sheds.
Weeks 4-6
By the end of the sixth week, your eyeliner tattoo will be mostly healed.
On the day
  • Do not touch the area that has been tattooed.
  • Use a fresh cotton tip to apply the aftercare cream to your freckles or beauty spot tattoo.
1-48 hours
afterwards
  • Avoid wetting or washing your face. To cleanse your face, use face wipes and avoid the area that has been tattooed.
2-14 days
afterwards
  • Avoid putting make-up over the healing tattoo.
  • Don’t scratch, rub or pick the area, as it can cause irritation, infection and scarring.
  • Apply an aftercare cream 1-3 times daily until peeling has stopped (usually five days after the treatment).
  • Avoid submerging your face in water, as it can increase the chance of infection and prevent the healing process.
  • Don’t expose your face to direct sun, tanning beds or wind.
  • Avoid excessive exercise, as sweating can cause colour loss.
  • Sleep with a clean pillowcase and change it regularly to avoid infection.
Days 1-4
The beauty spot or freckle tattoos will deepen in colour as they begin to scab. There may be some redness and swelling around the area.
Days 5-8
Scabs will begin to peel away, and the tattoo underneath will appear very light in colour. Some of the smaller freckle tattoos may even appear invisible.
Days 9-14
As the tattoo continues to heal, the freckles or beauty spot colour will reappear and deepen in colour but won’t be as dark as it is in the first few days. At this stage, your freckle or beauty spot tattoo will be between 30-60% lighter than when the treatment is first done.

Weeks 4-6
Your beauty spot or freckle tattoos will settle into their final colour and will have completely healed.
