A tattoo was never on my radar. However, I was diagnosed at the age of 57 with Invasive Lobular breast cancer. During treatment, I went through a tough time physically and mentally. I wanted something to celebrate the journey I have been on. Something I could look at every day, that reminds me that I’ve been brave and I’ve been strong. I feel very proud of my lotus tattoo. It has helped me tell my story my way!
For me, I believe Breast Cancer awareness saves lives. It is a conversation we should all have. A simple conversation can change your life and the life of somebody else. We all have breasts, it is something we all have in common, so we should create awareness and take the stigma away from it.
When I was diagnosed, my oncologists told me “Cancer might be starting this fight, but together we can kick it’s butt!”
Always remember, it is a battle, but you are not alone. Asking for help is not a weakness, it shows great courage. Together we will beat it and hopefully by 2030 deaths will reach zero for this disease!
To help mark my strength in this unwanted life event I decided to get the tattoo. I had originally wanted the tattoo across my chest, however since I am requiring more surgery in the future I had to move the tattoo to my back. I was lucky to have a wonderful artist that was able to adapt.
Having this tattoo allows me to feel proud in what I have been through. It is also nice to hear compliments on the art as it takes away from my thoughts and attention off my scars and body changes. I hope to bring awareness and get people to be in tune with their own bodies.
Unfortunately, breast cancer can affect everyone of all genders and ages!
