How To Care For The Area After Laser Tattoo Removal

Once your tattoo has been removed, the most important thing to do is to care for the area to ensure the healing process is successful.

Here is how to care for the area after a laser tattoo removal session.

Keep the area clean

For five days post-treatment, apply a thin layer of antibacterial cooling ointment and cover it with a gauze dressing.

Avoid picking or scratching

Just like with a new tattoo, avoid picking, stretching or rubbing the area once scabs form. Doing so can lead to irritation and scarring.

Wear loose clothing

If the treated area is on a part of your body covered by clothing, opt for loose-fitting fabrics to avoid unnecessary rubbing.

Stay hydrated and eat well

Proper hydration and a healthy diet can contribute to the body’s natural healing process.

Be patient

Healing after laser tattoo removal takes time. The treated area might experience redness, swelling, and even blistering, but these symptoms will subside over time.

What To Avoid After Laser Tattoo Removal

After undergoing laser tattoo removal, there are several things you should avoid to promote proper healing, minimise complications and achieve the best possible results.

Here are some things to avoid after laser tattoo removal
Direct sun exposure
UV rays can slow the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Protect the area with clothing or SPF 50 sunscreen if you need to be outside.
Rubbing, scratching or picking
Do not pick at scabs, blisters or any peeling skin that may form after the laser tattoo removal. Picking and scratching can lead to infection and scarring.
Hot water and saunas
Avoid hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms and hot baths for a few days after your tattoo removal, as the heat can worsen the swelling and irritation.
Swimming
Avoid swimming in the ocean and pools until the area has fully healed to reduce the risk of infection.
Applying make-up
Avoid applying make-up or cosmetics to the treated area until it has fully healed.

Laser Tattoo Removal Healing Timeline

The size of the tattoo you get removed will depend on how long it takes to heal. However, the healing stages for all laser tattoo removal procedures are as follows:
Stage 1
After the laser tattoo removal session, the treated area may appear red, swollen and sensitive. Your skin might also develop a white “frosting” due to the interaction between the laser and the ink. Applying an ice pack and keeping the area elevated can help reduce swelling.
Stage 2
In the days following the treatment, blisters may form over the area, a common reaction and part of the healing process. Do not pop the blisters; let them heal naturally.
Stage 3
The initial redness and swelling should start to subside after a couple of weeks. The treated area may look faded as the body’s immune response works to remove the fragmented ink particles.
Stage 4
A couple of months after the laser tattoo removal, the appearance of the treated tattoo should continue to improve. The ink will gradually fade, and the skin will return to a normal texture and colour.
Stage 5
The final results of laser tattoo removal can take several months to a year or more to fully show. The treated area should be significantly faded, and the skin should have returned to its normal state.
