How To Care For A New Piercing

Your new piercing looks great! To ensure it stays that way, here are some ways to care for it and ensure a smooth healing process.

Keep the piercing clean

Make sure your hands, bedding, eyewear, clothes and anything else that may come into contact with your piercing is clean.

Have a healthy mind and body

Eating healthy foods, drinking lots of water and maintaining a positive attitude will help the healing process.

Spray your piercing

Clean your piercing twice a day with the sterile solution.

Consider taking a multivitamin

Multivitamins that contain zinc and vitamin C can boost your body’s healing abilities.

What To Avoid With A New Piercing

At Celebrity Ink, there are many different types of piercings available. While all the piercings may be different, the things to avoid with a new piercing remain the same, such as
Avoid touching your piercing
(unless you’re cleaning it).
Avoid playing with your piercing
(twisting, turning or taking it out).
Avoid getting lotions, make-up or sprays in your piercing.
Avoid removing your jewellery
(the piercing may close).
Avoid wearing clothing that may catch your piercing (e.g. knitted fabrics).
Avoid overcleaning (it can be damaging and slow down the healing process).
Avoid Bathing instead of showering. Baths can harbour bacteria, so showers are best when your piercing is healing.

Piercing Healing Timeline

While all piercings have different healing times, the healing stages remain the same.
Week 1
Immediately after getting a new piercing, you may experience swelling, redness and tenderness around the area. During this time, keeping the area clean and following the aftercare instructions is important.
Weeks 2-3
In the following weeks after you get pierced, the initial swelling and redness will subside. However, the area around the piercing may still be sensitive to touch. During this time, you may also notice some clear or slightly yellow discharge, a normal part of the healing process.
Weeks 4-6
By this stage, the swelling should have reduced, and the initial tenderness should have improved. The discharge might lessen, and the area could form a thin layer of healing tissue around the piercing. It’s important to continue cleaning your piercing.
Weeks 6-12+
Depending on the type of piercing and your body’s healing response, the final stages of healing can take several months to a year. The piercing may appear healed on the surface, but the tissue inside still needs time to strengthen and mature.

Expected healing times

Whether you have recently got an ear lobe piercing, belly button piercing or dermal piercing, the healing timeline is different for all. You should wait until your piercing has healed before you change the jewellery in it.
