The Tattoo Fad That Didn’t Quite Make It Mainstream

Tattoos have been around for centuries but like fitness and fashion, it has seen its share of fad crazes! One of the tattoo trends that didn’t quite take-off was the Soundwave Tattoo. Designed in 2017 to accompany an augmented reality app. The idea is pretty neat, but maybe it was a bit ahead of its time and we simply need to catch up to the technology. Who knows why it’s not a bestseller, but if you’re curious about soundwave tattoos, read on!

What is a Soundwave Tattoo?

The idea behind this tattoo style is that it allows you to play an audio file from a tattoo. It’s designed to mirror the shape of a waveform of a recording and can be played back using a Skin Motion app. The waveform created from an audio file is stencilled onto your body and uploaded to an app. Then the app uses image recognition to identify the soundwave and play it back. A soundwave tattoo can playback up to 60 seconds but the best ones work between 5-20 seconds. Of course, you can’t use anything that is copyrighted so it’s best to use something from a personal recording.

How does it work?

A soundwave tattoo is created by making a recording. And then uploading it to generate a stencil for the design which is then taken to a trained tattoo artist. Once the soundwave tattoo is completed, an image of it is uploaded to the app and once activated the person can then open the Skin Motion app and use the camera on their phone to commence playback. The soundwave tattoo is limited by size, placement and how much it can be customised. It’s not for everyone, but think of it like using a QR code on your body!

We’re all about innovation. But do you really want something like a sound wave marked onto your skin and not be able to access the app in 5 years? Tattoos already come with regrets in some instances, so we don’t think you need to add another layer to that remorse!
