History of Tattooing

Tattoos have been practised since Neolithic times (around 12,000 years ago) throughout a range of cultures around the world. 

The origins of tattooing can be traced back to ancient civilisations, such as the Egyptians, who used tattoos as a way to practice their religious beliefs. 

Similarly, the Polynesian Islands have been using tattoos for thousands of years to symbolise their social status and lineage. 
Native American tribes practised tattooing as a way to mark their achievements. In Japan, tattoos were famously used to mark criminals.

Throughout history, tattoos have served a range of purposes. However, they weren’t popular in the West until the 18th and 19th centuries when sailors and explorers brought back tattoo traditions from their travels. 

Today, tattooing is a global art form and cultural phenomenon, with a range of styles and techniques representing individual expression, cultural heritage and personal stories.
